My Favorite Books I Read in August 2019

I read a total of 3 books in August. That's like, impressive y'all. I'm really getting back into my reading groove—a groove that I had BEFORE COLLEGE. I have to admit, college really distracted me from reading for pleasure. But since I graduated, I've developed a habit in decorating my bookshelves. Follow along with me on Goodreads (link below) and with these books I've read in August!

"Park Avenue Summer" by Renée Rosen

Rating: 5/5

Reading this book, I just couldn't put it down! It's based on the career of Helen Gurley Brown when she was the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan in the 1960s. If you don't already know Helen, she essentially reinvented Cosmopolitan magazine. Before Helen, Cosmo was a housewife’s magazine that was very conservative. Back then, Hearst Corporations didn't want Cosmo to be about all about sex, career, and bold fashion—like it is now. But that didn't stop Helen. She fought her way amongst the men who constantly doubted her—and fought hard, but not without real anxieties and worries that most women even today deal with. Narrated by her assistant at the time, who's now in her forties or fifties, it's in memory of Helen. Helen recently passed away in 2012 in NYC at the age of 90. I highly recommend this book. Like, I can't describe any further how much I recommend this book.

"The Proposal" by Jasmine Guillory

Rating: 4/5

Loved this book! It's a classic romantic comedy. The baseball on the front cover is what attracted me to this book, but when I read through the romance between Carlos and Nik, I couldn't put it down. But also, Nik is a freelance writer who made her living off writing in her pajamas from the safety of her couch. While reading this book, I fell in love more and more as I turn each page. I recommend reading The Wedding Date before, which is on my TBR as I write this post. The Wedding Date isn't a prequel to this book, but it has main characters that The Proposal features and you might be slightly confused.

"Own Your Everyday" by Jordan Lee Dooley

Rating: 5/5

Seriously, I loved this book. "Overcome the pressure to prove and show up for what you were made to do." I picked up this book several times over the past month, constantly reading chapters (and sometimes re-reading chapters) when I needed it the most. If you're ever suck in a comparison rut, wondering what in the heck you wanna do with your life, or just feel the pressure to prove yourself or worry about what others will think? Then this is the book for you. Jordan Lee Dooley, founder of SoulScripts, host of "SHE Podcast," author, blogger, and speaker, is a breath of fresh air for 20-something gal.
