The 30 Songs I Have ‘On Repeat’
I’ve been tip toe-ing between Apple Music and Spotify — frankly, I want to delete both and go back to CDs, but that circles around to the discussion of why physical media should make a comeback, an opinion that I haven’t fully fleshed out yet. Some days, I want to throw my phone into the ocean and convert everything to physical media (books, DVDs, CDs, etc.). But thinking realistically, I remember this world is digital-first. And in order to live and breathe in this world, I have to be digital-first.
Plus, Spotify is how I find new-to-me artists. Through instant streaming. Sure, there’s probably enough evidence that CD sales support the artist more than streaming does. And if I like an artist enough, I will buy their CD or vinyl.
But for now, I will continue paying my Spotify subscription.
Right now, I’m bouncing between Apple Music and Spotify, but I always come back to Spotify because I like the features it brings. It gives remixes, or mixes, that blend different yet similar artists together into one playlist. Like I can listen to Taylor Swift, Maisie Peters, Sabrina Carpenter, and Djo all in one playlist. And it changes every day — pretty cool, right?
One Spotify feature I’ve been leaning towards is the “On Repeat” playlist — it tracks my listening habits and compiles all the songs I’ve been listening to on repeat into one playlist — it’s convenient for when I just want a compilation of my favorite songs. I hardly skip these songs, and if I do, it’s only because of my current mood and what I want to listen to.
Interesting things to note with the below list. Taylor Swift, Maisie Peters, and Djo are no surprise at this point, I’ve been listening to TS and MP non-stop all year. I started listening to Djo’s new album, The Crux, in April when it was released, and have been literally obsessed with the album ever since. When I think about the race to be the top artist of the year, Djo could topple TS — although, I hardly see that happening because Taylor’s discography is too wide for me to ever replace her as my top artist on Spotify. Especially after she bought her masters and I can listen to the original Fearless!
Lorde and Renee Rapp have surprised me! I started listening to Lorde (I know, I know — I’m a little too late as Jojo would say) and I regret not listening to her sooner. I saw a comment on TikTok recently where the user wishes they could listen to Melodrama for the first time again, and honestly, I get it. I had the pleasure of listening to it for the first time recently, very recently, and I wish I could go back and listen to it all over again for the first time. It’s a damn good album. And Renee Rapp! What do I say about her? Her Snow Angel album has some hits that I can’t help but jam to, but her earlier songs (not sure what albums they come from) like Tattoos keep me coming back for more. I’m beyond excited for her new album; I’ve listened to the hit single, Leave Me Alone, too many times and I'm really excited to see what she has in store.
Although Gracie Abrams’s viral track That’s So True is at the top of the list, I have been skipping her songs lately. Not because I don’t like her songs, but I haven’t been in the mood for her moody lyrics and melodies lately. I think Taylor covers that enough for me. However, if you read on for the list, you notice “us” feat. Taylor Swift remains on this ‘on repeat’ list.
One thing that surprised me was no Olivia Rodrigo. Lately, I’ve been wondering when she will release new music. Not to rush her creative process or anything, because she is living her best life and thriving in her music career right now, but it will be two years since GUTS came out in September, and I for one need some pop-punk in my life right now. Especially after Djo thrust me into the throes of pop-rock. Would love to see what Olivia Rodrigo is cooking up right now.
